Fifteen carriages, 38 en-suite cabins and no more than 80 guests. The exterior is the world's first fully hand-painted luxury tourist train, carrying Han-dynasty cloud motifs painted by a team from the Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts; the interiors are by HBA, their first luxury-train project. On board are two dining cars, a lounge car with a piano, a 270 degree observation car, a karaoke lounge, a games room with an automatic mahjong table and a cigar room. Each cabin receives a complimentary hour in both the karaoke and games rooms.

Twin, King and Family cabins are priced per person and are sold on the basis of two guests sharing one cabin, so the minimum booking for those cabins is two guests. The Grand Suite is different: it is sold as a whole suite at one price, so a single guest may book it, and it accommodates up to two adults plus one child aged 12 or below. There are only two Grand Suites on board.

No. Because this is a land journey there is no airport tax, and service is included in the fare, so no tipping is expected.

The journey operates in both directions and both are shown on this page. Each departure date is labelled either Xining to Dunhuang or Dunhuang to Xining, so please check the label when you choose your date. The programme is the same in either direction, simply experienced in reverse order. The day-by-day on this page follows the Dunhuang to Xining direction.

Mornings and afternoons are spent ashore on the excursions listed in the itinerary, always by private vehicle with your Destination Ambassador and, at the major sites, VIP entry and a specialist guide. The rest of the time belongs to the train. Breakfast and dinner are served in one of the two dining cars, the observation car with its 270 degree windows is the place to watch the plateau go by, and the lounge car, the KTV room, the mahjong room and the cigar room are there when you want them. Each cabin receives one complimentary hour in both the KTV and mahjong rooms, and the minibar in your cabin is replenished daily at no charge.

Sightseeing is unhurried and no trekking is required, but the route crosses the plateau: Dunhuang sits at about 1,000 m, Xining at 2,200 m and Chaka at about 3,000 m. Please bring medication for altitude symptoms, rest well on arrival, drink bottled or boiled water and eat moderately. The dry air and strong sunlight call for sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and lip balm, and the wide day-to-night temperature swing calls for long sleeves and a warm jacket. If the Mogao Grottoes cannot be reserved and the day is switched to the Silk Road Ancient Trail crossing, that route crosses rough Gobi and mountain tracks and is not recommended for guests who are pregnant or who have serious cardiovascular or cerebrovascular conditions, hypertension, anaemia, or lumbar or cervical spine problems.

游览节奏轻松，无需徒步登山，但沿途行经高原：【敦煌】海拔约1000米，【西宁】约2200米，【茶卡】约3000米。请您备妥缓解高原反应的药物，抵达后充分休息，饮用瓶装水或开水，饮食适量。高原气候干燥、紫外线强烈，请携带太阳镜、遮阳帽、防晒霜及润唇膏；昼夜温差大，请备长袖衣裤及保暖外套。全日越野方案途经戈壁与山路，路况颠簸，孕妇及患有严重心脑血管疾病、高血压、贫血、腰椎或颈椎疾病的宾客不建议参加。

If you hold an ordinary Singapore passport, no visa is needed. Since 9 February 2024 Singapore and China have a mutual 30-day visa-free arrangement, which comfortably covers this journey. Travellers on other passports, for example a Singapore PR holding a foreign passport, should check the rules that apply to them. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the departure date.
