Fifteen carriages, 38 en-suite cabins and no more than 80 guests. The exterior is the world's first fully hand-painted luxury tourist train, carrying Han-dynasty cloud motifs painted by a team from the Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts; the interiors are by HBA, their first luxury-train project. On board are two dining cars, a lounge car with a piano, a 270 degree observation car, a karaoke lounge, a games room with an automatic mahjong table and a cigar room. Each cabin receives a complimentary hour in both the karaoke and games rooms.

Twin, King and Family cabins are priced per person and sold on the basis of two guests sharing one cabin, so the minimum booking for those cabins is two guests. The Grand Suite is sold as a whole suite at one price, so a single guest may book it, and it accommodates up to two adults plus one child aged 12 or below. There are only two Grand Suites on board.

The pace is unhurried and no trekking is required, but this is a long journey across a very large region, and several days include drives of three to five hours between destinations. Altitude ranges from about 500 m at Hami to roughly 2,500 m at Nalati and 2,200 m at Xining and Qinghai Lake, so please bring medication for altitude symptoms, rest well on arrival, drink bottled or boiled water and eat moderately. The dry air and strong sunlight call for sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and lip balm, and the wide day-to-night temperature swing calls for long sleeves and a warm jacket. Some steps at the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves are steep; guests with limited mobility may visit Keziliya Grand Canyon instead.

Seven nights are spent aboard the Silk Road Express in the cabin you book, and nine ashore in a room category matching that cabin: Wanda Vista Xining at the start and again at the end, a hotel in Hami, Conrad Altay Hemu, log cabins inside the Kanas scenic area, InterContinental Yining, Hotel Indigo Nalati, the N39 Desert Resort in the Taklamakan and UrCove by Hyatt beside Kashgar Old City. Staying inside the Kanas scenic area and in the desert at N39 is deliberate, since both places are at their best early and late in the day.

If you hold an ordinary Singapore passport, no visa is needed. Since 9 February 2024 Singapore and China have a mutual 30-day visa-free arrangement, which comfortably covers this seventeen-day journey. Travellers on other passports, for example a Singapore PR holding a foreign passport, should check the rules that apply to them. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the departure date.
