Northeast China (东北 / Dongbei) is China’s northernmost region — the three provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, reached by most Singapore travellers via Beijing. You go for the world-famous Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival (冰雪大世界), China Snow Town, Wusong rime ice, Chagan Lake winter fishing and Changbai Mountain in winter, or for the flaming maple foliage of autumn.
In deep winter (December to February) the Northeast becomes a frozen wonderland. Harbin’s Ice and Snow World rises in illuminated palaces of carved ice; China Snow Town (中国雪乡) sits buried under thick powder; Wusong rime frosts the trees on still, cold mornings; Yabuli offers skiing; Chagan Lake keeps alive a centuries-old Mongolian ice-fishing harvest; and Changbai Mountain wears its snow crown. It is China’s headline cold-weather destination.
In autumn (late September to mid October) the same land turns crimson and gold. The Jiaohe Hongye Valley, the forests of Benxi and Guanmen Mountain glow red, and Panjin’s Red Beach flushes scarlet — a quieter, warmer way to see the Northeast at its most colourful.

Northeast China has two headline seasons. Winter (Dec-Feb) is the marquee time — ice, snow and rime — for Harbin’s Ice & Snow World, China Snow Town, Wusong Island frost, Yabuli skiing, Chagan Lake ice fishing and Changbai snowscapes. Autumn (late Sep-mid Oct) brings crimson maple and Panjin’s Red Beach. Pick winter for the classic ice-and-snow spectacle, autumn for foliage.

Winter (December to February) · 冬季（12月至2月）
Winter is the region’s signature season and the reason most travellers head north. This is when Harbin’s Ice & Snow World (冰雪大世界) glows, China Snow Town (中国雪乡) sits under deep drifts, Wusong Island (雾凇岛) frost coats the riverbanks, Yabuli (亚布力) opens its ski slopes, Chagan Lake (查干湖) holds its centuries-old ice-fishing harvest, and Changbai Mountain (长白山) turns to pure snowscape. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival typically runs from around late December into February; exact dates are set each year, so we plan departures around the peak of the season rather than a fixed date.

Autumn is the quieter counterpart to winter — a short, vivid window when Northeast red maple (东北红叶) blazes through the valleys and Panjin’s Red Beach (盘锦红海滩) turns crimson. It is a slower, warmer way to see the region, built around foliage rather than ice. Peak colour depends on that year’s weather, temperature and rainfall, so we cannot guarantee foliage at its absolute peak, though our departure dates are chosen for the best chance.

Pack seriously for winter. Northeast winters are deeply cold, commonly around -20°C and colder inland or at altitude such as Changbai Mountain. Harbin Ice & Snow World 冰雪大世界
Harbin’s Ice & Snow World is a vast park of illuminated ice palaces, towers and slides carved from Songhua River ice. Among our Northeast tours, only the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person) is built around it, closing with two consecutive nights in Harbin. The festival’s exact opening dates are set yearly, so we plan for the peak-season window rather than a fixed date.

Harbin City & Volga Manor 哈尔滨市区 · 伏尔加庄园
Both winter tours reach Harbin, the “Ice City” on the Songhua River known for its Russian-influenced architecture. The 9-day Northeast China Ice & Snow Adventure (from S$2,218 per person) closes its Harbin days with Volga Manor, a Russian-style estate park of onion domes and lakeside pavilions. The 10-day Harbin Ice World tour also overnights in Harbin. Volga Manor features only on the 9-day tour.

China Snow Town (雪乡) is a mountain village where snow piles thick on rooftops and lanterns glow against the white. Both winter tours visit it: the 9-day Northeast China Ice & Snow Adventure (from S$2,218 per person, Yabuli into Snow Town) and the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person). It is a winter-only stop and does not appear on the autumn maple tour.

Wusong Island Rime 雾凇岛
On still, frosty winter mornings, water vapour from the unfrozen Songhua River settles on riverside trees as delicate rime frost (雾凇). Both winter tours include Wusong Island: the 9-day Northeast China Ice & Snow Adventure (from S$2,218 per person) and the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person). Rime forms only under specific cold, humid conditions, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Yabuli Skiing 亚布力
Yabuli (亚布力) is Northeast China’s best-known ski resort, set in forested hills of Heilongjiang. It appears on both winter tours: the 9-day Northeast China Ice & Snow Adventure (from S$2,218 per person) and the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person). It is a winter stop only and is not part of the autumn maple itinerary.

Changbai Mountain, Yanji & Snow Ridge 长白山 · 延吉 · 雪岭
Changbai Mountain (长白山) is Northeast China’s sacred volcanic peak, cloaked in snow in winter, approached through Yanji (延吉) and the forested Snow Ridge (雪岭). Only the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person) reaches this cluster. Neither the 9-day ice & snow tour nor the autumn maple tour includes Changbai, Yanji or Snow Ridge.

Chagan Lake Winter Fishing 查干湖冬捕
Chagan Lake winter fishing (查干湖冬捕) is a centuries-old Mongolian tradition in which fishermen cast great nets beneath the frozen lake and haul the winter catch across the ice. Only the 10-day Harbin Ice World, Changbai & Chagan Winter Fishing (from S$2,798 per person) reaches Chagan Lake, via Songyuan. It is exclusive to this deepest-winter tour and appears on no other Northeast itinerary.
查干湖冬捕是一项延续数百年的蒙古族传统–渔人于封冻湖面下布下巨网，将冬日渔获破冰拉出。唯有 10 天的 哈尔滨冰雪大世界 · 长白山 · 查干湖冬捕之旅（每人从 S$2,798 起）经松原抵达查干湖。此体验为这条最深冬线路独有，不出现于其他东北行程。
Autumn Maple & Panjin Red Beach 秋日红叶 · 盘锦红海滩
The autumn palette belongs entirely to the 11-day Northeast Maple tour (from S$2,390 per person). It threads Jiaohe Hongye Valley (蛟河红叶谷), Dragon Bay (龙湾), and Benxi’s Laobiangou (老边沟), Dashi Lake (大石湖) and Guanmen Mountain (关门山) for red foliage, then reaches Dandong and Panjin Red Beach (盘锦红海滩), where seepweed turns crimson in autumn. None of these appear on the winter tours. Peak colour varies with each year’s weather, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Do Singaporeans need a China visa for Northeast China? / 新加坡人前往中国东北需要签证吗？
No. Ordinary Singapore passport holders do not need a visa for Northeast China. Since 9 February 2024, Singapore and mainland China have a mutual 30-day visa-free arrangement and our tours run within 30 days; travellers on other passports should check their own nationality’s rules. As Singapore’s dedicated China-tour specialist since 1994, China Express Travel has handled China visas for more than 30 years and will guide you through every step. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival and its Ice and Snow World (冰雪大世界) typically run from around late December into February, with exact dates set each year. Winter (December to February) is the headline season for ice sculptures, rime and snow. Late December to early January is peak snow season.
