Dali is where snow-capped Cangshan meets the shimmering waters of Erhai. Shangri-La 香格里拉 (Songzanlin Monastery, Dukezong Old Town)

On the high plateau, Shangri-La feels like a world apart. On the 16-day Panoramic Tour travellers explore the atmospheric Dukezong Ancient Town, turn Asia’s largest prayer wheel at Guishan Park, and stand before Songzanlin Monastery, the grand Tibetan temple known as the “Little Potala Palace.” This region appears only on our 16-day tour.

Meili Snow Mountain sunrise 梅里雪山日出

Rising early to watch dawn light gild the sacred peaks of Meili Snow Mountain is one of the most stirring moments in all of Yunnan. This sunrise is arranged only on our 16 Days Yunnan Panoramic Tour, en route from Deqin. As with all mountain views, clear skies cannot be guaranteed.

Lijiang 丽江 (Lijiang Ancient Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain 玉龙雪山)

The UNESCO-listed Lijiang Ancient Town, with its cobbled lanes and canals, features on both journeys. On the 16-day Panoramic Tour travellers also ride the cable car up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to Glacier Park, visit the turquoise Blue Moon Valley and watch the outdoor spectacle Impression Lijiang. The 8-day tour takes a gentler approach, visiting the Naxi village of Yuhu at the foot of the mountain and the Dongba culture of Baisha.

Lugu Lake 泸沽湖 · Mosuo culture

Lugu Lake is a sapphire-blue plateau lake and the home of the Mosuo people, famed for their matriarchal traditions. On the 16 Days Yunnan Panoramic Tour travellers take in the lake from the observation platform, glide across the water on a Mosuo pig-trough boat, visit a traditional Mosuo village and join a lively bonfire party. Shaxi Ancient Town 沙溪古镇

One of the last surviving market towns on the ancient Tea Horse Road, Shaxi is a quiet, well-preserved gem and a filming location for the popular drama “Meet Yourself.” Our 8 Days Kunming · Dali · Shaxi · Lijiang tour gives you two nights here to wander Yujin Bridge, the old stage square and the Pioneer Bookstore at an unhurried pace.

Tengchong 腾冲 (Rehai geothermal, Ginkgo Village)

This charming border town is known for its steaming geothermal wonders and golden autumn ginkgo. How many days do I need for a Yunnan trip?

It depends on how far north you wish to travel. Our flagship 16 Days Yunnan Panoramic Tour is the classic full loop, taking in Kunming, Dali, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La, Deqin and Meili Snow Mountain, Lijiang, Lugu Lake and the western border towns of Tengchong, Ruili and Mangshi. If your time is shorter, the 8 Days Kunming · Dali · Shaxi · Lijiang tour is a relaxed taster of the classic towns that does not include Shangri-La.

Which month is best to visit Yunnan?

Yunnan is mild for much of the year, so most seasons reward you. In brief: spring (March to May) brings flowers and comfortable weather, with Kunming’s cherry blossom roughly February to late March; autumn (September to November) brings clear skies and the best odds for the Meili Snow Mountain sunrise; Tengchong’s ginkgo peaks around late November; and the Hani terraces are most reflective from about November to March. Will I get altitude sickness?

For most travellers, altitude is a gentle matter in Yunnan. Kunming, the City of Eternal Spring, sits at about 1,891m, which is mild. Only the 16-day tour climbs onto the high plateau at Shangri-La and Deqin, roughly 3,300m and above; there we keep the pace gentle to help you acclimatise, and we recommend drinking plenty of water. If you have a heart or respiratory condition, please consult your doctor before travelling. The 8-day tour stays at lower elevations throughout.

Do Singapore passport holders need a China visa?

No visa is needed if you hold an ordinary Singapore passport. Since 9 February 2024, Singapore and mainland China have a mutual 30-day visa-free arrangement for tourism, business, family visits and transit, and our tours run well within 30 days; travellers on other passports should check their own nationality’s entry rules. As Singapore’s dedicated China travel specialist for more than 30 years, our team has handled China visas throughout that time and will guide you through every step. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of departure.

Is there any shopping on the tour?

No. Our Yunnan tours are no-shopping (纯玩) itineraries, so your days are spent on the scenery and culture you came for, not at commission stops. You are of course free to browse local markets and ancient-town shops in your own leisure time.

What is the Chengdu Hao Panda Train like?

The Chengdu Hao (成都号) is a panda-themed tour train. Its cabins sleep two, and every cabin has a private en-suite bathroom with wet and dry separation and a thermostatic shower, with luggage assistance provided throughout. It is used on our two seasonal western-Yunnan trips: the spring cherry-blossom and Hani terraces tour, and the autumn Tengchong ginkgo tour.

「成都号」是一列熊猫主题的旅游专列。包厢为两人一室，每间客房均设独立卫浴（干湿分离）及恒温淋浴，全程提供行李协助。它用于我们两条季节性的滇西行程：春季樱花季与哈尼梯田之旅，以及秋季腾冲银杏季之旅。

The classic road loop or the seasonal Panda Train trips: which should I choose?

Choose the classic road loop (the 16-day tour) if you want the signature sights of northern Yunnan: Dali, Shangri-La, Lijiang and Lugu Lake. Choose a Panda Train trip if you are travelling in season for a specific western-Yunnan theme, either the spring cherry blossom with the Hani (Yuanyang) rice terraces, or the autumn Tengchong ginkgo. Please note the Panda Train trips do not cover Dali, Lijiang or Shangri-La.

What is included in the tour fare?

Every Yunnan tour includes international round-trip airfare, an air-conditioned coach (plus high-speed rail or the Panda Train where noted), twin-share hotels, the meals listed in the itinerary, all listed attraction tickets, and an excellent Chinese-speaking guide. Not included are the China visa, the single-room supplement, personal expenses, excess baggage and porter tips, and personal travel insurance; airport tax and driver and guide tips are added per traveller at booking.

For spring cherry blossom and the Hani terraces on the Panda Train / 想乘熊猫专列赏春樱与哈尼梯田

Choose Trip C, the 10 Days Chengdu Hao (Yunnan Cherry Blossom + Yuanyang Terraces), from S$4,988 per person. You travel aboard the panda-themed Chengdu Hao tour train to Kunming’s cherry blossom avenues and the UNESCO-listed Bada and Duoyishu Hani Rice Terraces, with Tengchong hot springs and Pu’er tea country along the way. Cherry blossom season runs roughly from February to the end of March and depends on the weather, so full bloom cannot be guaranteed. This trip does not include Dali, Lijiang or Shangri-La.

Choose Trip D, the Chengdu Hao · Yunnan Ginkgo Season (9 days), from S$4,588 per person. Also aboard the Chengdu Hao, this journey is built around Tengchong’s Ginkgo Village, at its golden best in late November, along with Kunming, Heshun, Mangshi’s Golden Pagoda and Peacock Banquet, and Pu’er tea country. Ginkgo colour is weather-dependent, so late November is chosen as the most likely peak. This trip does not include Dali, Lijiang or Shangri-La.
