Chaozhou, Shantou & the Teochew Homeland / 潮州、汕头与潮汕原乡
Chaoshan is the Teochew homeland in eastern Guangdong, made up of Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang. It is where gongfu tea (工夫茶), beef-ball hotpot, braised goose and the thundering Yingge dance are still part of daily life, and it is the ancestral homeland (侨乡) of Singapore’s large Teochew community. For many Singapore families, a trip here is a roots and heritage journey back to the villages their forebears left generations ago.

Best time to visit Chaoshan / 最佳旅游季节
Autumn and winter are the best seasons — roughly October to February, when the weather is mild and dry, comfortable for walking the old towns and the Nan’ao Island coast. Spring is warm but wetter, and summer is hot and humid, so autumn and winter remain the most pleasant window for a Singapore traveller.
秋冬是最佳旅游季节,大约十月至次年二月,气候温和干爽,适合漫步古城和南澳岛海岸。春季温暖但较潮湿,夏季炎热闷热,因此秋冬仍是新加坡旅客最舒适的出游时段。

Chaozhou Old City · 潮州古城
The heart of Chaoshan heritage is Chaozhou’s walled old city, home to the Guangji Bridge (广济桥), one of China’s oldest bridges, the memorial-archway street Paifang Street (牌坊街), the ancient Kaiyuan Temple (开元寺), and the old city walls and Guangji Gate. It is a place to walk slowly, sip tea and feel Teochew history around you.
潮汕文化的核心是潮州古城,这里有中国最古老的桥梁之一广济桥、牌坊林立的牌坊街、古朴的开元寺,以及古城墙与广济门。适合慢慢漫步、品一杯工夫茶,感受周遭的潮州历史。
Shantou — Xiaogongyuan Arcade Quarter · 汕头小公园骑楼街区
Shantou’s Xiaogongyuan (小公园) is a 1930s arcade quarter of curving shophouse streets, a nostalgic reminder of the port city’s heyday. It is also home to ‘Dear You’ (给阿嬷的情书) film locations, making it a favourite stop for visitors who loved the movie.
汕头的小公园是一片一九三〇年代的骑楼街区,弧形的老骑楼诉说着这座港城昔日的繁华。这里也是电影《给阿嬷的情书》的取景地,深受喜爱这部影片的旅客青睐。
Nan’ao Island · 南澳岛
Off the Shantou coast, Nan’ao Island (南澳岛) offers sea views, coastal roads and fresh Teochew seafood — a relaxed contrast to the old-town streets. It is a scenic highlight of the tour.

Jieyang and Chenghai · 揭阳与澄海
Jieyang (揭阳) and Chenghai (澄海) round out the Chaoshan trio with more local streetscapes, temples and everyday Teochew life away from the busier stops. They give the journey its unhurried, hometown feel.

Living Teochew culture — tea, food and opera · 潮汕活态文化:茶、美食与潮剧
Chaoshan’s real treasure is its living culture: gongfu tea (工夫茶); Teochew cuisine such as beef-ball hotpot (牛肉丸), braised goose (卤鹅), oyster omelette and congee; plus Teochew opera (潮剧) and the powerful Yingge dance (英歌舞). For Singapore’s Teochew families, these are the flavours and sounds of home.

Fujian Tulou near Yongding · 永定福建土楼
On the 8-day tour, the route also reaches the Fujian Tulou (福建土楼) near Yongding — the UNESCO-listed Hakka roundhouses. These massive communal earthen dwellings are one of China’s most striking pieces of vernacular architecture.

Practical FAQ / 常见问题
Do Singaporeans need a China visa? / 新加坡人需要中国签证吗?
No. Singapore ordinary-passport holders enjoy 30-day mutual visa-free entry to China (since 9 February 2024), which comfortably covers this 8-day tour, so no visa is needed. Travellers on other passports, for example a Singapore PR holding a foreign passport, should check the rules for their own nationality.
不需要。新加坡普通护照持有人享有中新三十天互免签证待遇(自二〇二四年二月九日起),足以涵盖这趟八日游,因此无需办理签证。持其他护照的旅客,例如持外国护照的新加坡永久居民,请自行查询其本国的相关规定。
When is the best time to go? / 什么时候去最好?
Autumn and winter (about October to February) are ideal, with mild, dry weather. Spring is warm but wetter and summer is hot and humid, so we recommend the cooler autumn and winter months.
秋冬(约十月至二月)最为理想,气候温和干爽。春季温暖但较潮湿,夏季炎热闷热,因此我们建议选择较凉爽的秋冬季节出行。
How physically demanding is it? / 行程的体力要求高吗?
It is moderate and comfortable for most travellers. There is walking through old towns, temples, the Xiaogongyuan streets and around the Tulou, mostly on flat ground with some steps. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Eight days is a well-paced length for this route (Singapore-Xiamen-Yongding Tulou-Meixian-Jieyang-Shantou-Chenghai-Nan’ao Island-Chaozhou-return). It covers the Chaoshan old towns, the coast and the Fujian Tulou without feeling rushed.
