A North Xinjiang journey follows China’s far-northwest Altai and Tianshan country: the fairytale Tuvan villages of Kanas and Hemu, the seismic-fault geopark of Koktokay, the alpine mirror of Sayram Lake, the “grassland in the sky” at Nalati, the legendary Duku Highway, and Tianshan Tianchi. Kanas 喀纳斯 (Fish Viewing Pavilion, Moon Bay, Wolong Bay)

A crystal-clear alpine lake ringed by dense forest and mountains. Ascend the Fish Viewing Pavilion for a panorama over the lake, then follow the bays, Moon Bay, Wolong Bay and Immortal Bay, along the water. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A), the 11-day autumn tour (Trip B) and the 18-day Panda Train (Trip D).

Hemu Village 禾木 (Tuvan village)

A fairytale-like village of Tuvan wooden houses set among Siberian forest, rivers and alpine meadows, famed as a photographers’ favourite. Visited on Trip A, Trip B and Trip D; the autumn tour (Trip B) is timed for its golden foliage, and the Panda Train (Trip D) adds a Hemu afternoon tea.

Koktokay National Geopark 可可托海

One of the world’s most spectacular and best-preserved seismic fault zones, often called a “Geological Museum”, alongside the picturesque Kekesuli Lake and the historic No.3 Mine Pit. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A) and the 11-day autumn tour (Trip B).

世界最壮观、保存最完好的地震断裂带遗迹之一，素有“地质博物馆”之称，并可游览秀美的可可苏里湖与著名的三号矿坑。16天旗舰团（行程A）与11天秋色团（行程B）到访。

Sayram Lake 赛里木湖

A vast, deep-blue alpine lake ringed by snow-capped mountains and grassland, often called the “Pearl of Asia”. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A) on the way to Yining, and also on the 18-day Panda Train (Trip D).

Nalati Grassland 那拉提

One of the world’s major grasslands, a “grassland in the sky” weaving together alpine meadows, forests, snow peaks and Kazakh culture. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A) and the 18-day Panda Train (Trip D).

世界四大草原之一，被誉为“空中草原”，雪山、森林、草原交织，并可感受哈萨克民族风情。16天旗舰团（行程A）与18天成都号熊猫专列（行程D）到访。

Duku Highway 独库公路 (“four seasons in one day”)

A legendary mountain road that crosses high passes with “four seasons in one day, ten miles of changing skies” scenery, passing the Duku Highway Memorial Hall and Monument. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A) only. Note: the highway is open only from about June to early October and is closed by snow the rest of the year.

传奇的翻山公路，沿途“一日游四季，十里不同天”，并可参观独库公路纪念馆与纪念碑。仅16天旗舰团（行程A）行经。请注意：独库公路一般仅于六月至十月初开放，其余时间因积雪封闭。

Tianshan Tianchi 天山天池

A UNESCO-listed alpine lake set beneath the snow-capped Bogda Peak, ringed by forests and mountains. Visited on the 16-day flagship (Trip A) and the 11-day autumn tour (Trip B).

列入世界自然遗产的高山湖泊，坐落于雪峰博格达峰之下，森林与群山环绕。16天旗舰团（行程A）与11天秋色团（行程B）到访。

Wucaitan Five-Colour Beach 五彩滩 & Sea Devil City 海上魔鬼城

Colourful yardan (wind-eroded) landforms: the Five-Colour Beach glows beside the Irtysh River, while the Sea Devil City rises in dramatic rock formations beside Jili Lake. Visited on the 11-day autumn tour (Trip B).

色彩斑斓的雅丹风蚀地貌：五彩滩在额尔齐斯河畔流光溢彩，海上魔鬼城则于吉力湖畔奇石林立。11天秋色团（行程B）到访。

Best time to visit North Xinjiang / 北疆几月最好

The two best windows are the summer green season (roughly June to August) and the short autumn-foliage window (roughly mid-September to mid-October). For green grasslands, wildflowers and the open Duku Highway, travel in summer; for the famous 北疆秋色, Kanas and Hemu’s golden birch and larch, aim for late September to early October, and accept that the peak is short and weather-dependent. Winter is very cold and most high passes, including the Duku Highway, are closed.

最佳的两个季节是夏季的绿色草原季（约6月至8月）与短暂的秋色季（约9月中旬至10月中旬）。若想看翠绿草原、野花与开放的独库公路，请于夏季出行；若想追北疆秋色 · 喀纳斯与禾木的金色白桦与落叶松，则宜于9月下旬至10月上旬前往，并请留意最佳期短暂、受天气影响。冬季严寒，独库公路等多数高山垭口与景观路段封闭。

• Summer (roughly June to August) · best for green grasslands (Nalati 那拉提, Sayram Lake 赛里木湖), wildflowers, and the Duku Highway 独库公路, which is open only about June to early October. Peak season.
• Autumn (roughly mid-September to mid-October) · best for the signature North Xinjiang foliage: the golden birch and larch of Kanas 喀纳斯 and Hemu 禾木, and colour at Wucaitan and Koktokay 可可托海. The peak is short (often late September to early October) and cannot be guaranteed.
• Winter · very cold; most high passes and scenic routes, including the Duku Highway, are closed.

• 夏季（约6月至8月） · 最适合翠绿草原（那拉提、赛里木湖）、野花，以及独库公路（约仅6月至10月初开放）。旺季。

Practical FAQ / 常见问题

How many days do I need for a North Xinjiang tour? / 北疆旅游需要几天？

It depends on how much of the region a traveller wishes to see. Our flagship 16-Day Northern Xinjiang · Natural Scenery Journey is the most complete loop, taking in Kanas, Hemu, Koktokay, Sayram Lake, Yining, the Nalati grassland, the Duku Highway and Tianshan Tianchi. To focus instead on the golden foliage around Kanas and Hemu, our 11-Day Enchanted Autumn Northern Xinjiang is a shorter loop timed for the autumn season.

What is the best month to visit? / 几月去最好？

There are two very different windows. In the summer green season (roughly June to August), the grasslands of Nalati and Sayram Lake turn lush and green, wildflowers bloom, and the Duku Highway is open (it runs only about June to early October). The short autumn foliage window, roughly mid-September to mid-October, is when Kanas and Hemu’s birch and larch forests turn gold. Autumn colour depends on the weather each year and cannot be guaranteed. Please see our “Best time to visit” section above for the full seasonal picture.

北疆有两个截然不同的旺季。夏季绿意盎然（约六月至八月），那拉提与赛里木湖的草原碧绿、野花盛放，独库公路也在开放期内（仅约六月至十月初通行）。而短暂的秋色期约为九月中旬至十月中旬，正是喀纳斯与禾木的白桦与落叶松林转为金黄之时。秋色受当年天气影响，恕难保证。完整的季节说明请参阅上文的「最佳旅游季节」一节。

Is there a lot of driving? / 车程会很长吗？

Yes. Xinjiang is vast, so several days involve longer but scenic drives between attractions, with some stretches on desert expressways or the legendary Duku Highway. Our coaches are air-conditioned, and the guide builds in rest stops and photo points along the way. The scenery en route is very much part of the journey.

Do Singapore passport holders need a China visa? / 新加坡护照持有者需要办理中国签证吗？

No visa is needed if you hold an ordinary Singapore passport. Since 9 February 2024, Singapore and mainland China have a mutual 30-day visa-free arrangement for tourism, business, family visits and transit, and our tours run well within 30 days; travellers on other passports should check their own nationality’s entry rules. As Singapore’s dedicated China travel specialist since 1994, we have handled China visas for more than 30 years and will guide travellers through every step. Please ensure the passport is valid for at least six months from the date of departure.

无需签证。持普通新加坡护照者自2024年2月9日起可享中新30天互免签证，适用于旅游、商务、探亲及过境，我们的行程均在30天以内；持其他护照的旅客请另行确认所属国籍的入境规定。作为新加坡自1994年起专营中国旅游的旅行社，华运办理中国签证已逾三十年，将全程指引每一步。请确保护照自出发日期起至少有六个月有效期。

Is there any shopping on the tour? / 行程中会安排购物吗？

No. This is a no-shopping tour. There are no compulsory shopping stops, so the time is spent on the scenery and the itinerary travellers came for.

不会。本行程为纯玩团、无购物安排，绝无强制购物站，让时间都用在真正想看的风景与行程上。

North Xinjiang, East Xinjiang or South Xinjiang, which trip should I choose? / 北疆、东疆还是南疆，我该选哪一个？

They are different regions with different tours. North Xinjiang (Kanas, Hemu, Nalati and more) is covered by our 16-day full loop or the 11-day autumn loop. East Xinjiang (Jiangbulake, Hami and the Dahaidao Yardan wilderness) is a distinct region on our 10-Day Eastern Xinjiang tour. For North and South Xinjiang together, that is our premium 18-day Panda Train (see below).

What is the Chengdu Hao Panda Train option? / 成都号熊猫专列是怎样的行程？

It is our premium 18-Day Chengdu Hao Panda Train · Grand Panoramic of Northern & Southern Xinjiang. Aboard the panda-themed Chengdu Hao train, it links South Xinjiang (Turpan, Kashgar, the Pamir Plateau and Kuqa) with North Xinjiang (Yining, Nalati, Hemu and Kanas), plus Urumqi. Cabins sleep two, each with a private en-suite bathroom, making it the luxurious, all-in-one way to see both halves of Xinjiang.

What is included in the tour fare? / 团费包含哪些项目？

Our fares include round-trip international airfare, air-conditioned coach transport (plus the Chengdu Hao train on the Panda Train tour), twin-share hotel rooms, the meals listed in the itinerary, entrance tickets to all listed attractions, and an excellent Mandarin-speaking guide. Not included: the China visa fee, single-room supplement, personal expenses, excess baggage, hotel porter tips and personal insurance; airport tax and driver & guide tips are added per traveller at booking.

• Focused on the autumn foliage and short on time? Choose Trip B, the 11-day autumn journey. It is timed for the golden birch forests of Kanas, Hemu and Wucaitan, covering the signature northern colour highlights in a shorter trip, from S$3,480 per person. (Autumn colour is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed.)
• Prefer a different corner of Xinjiang? Choose Trip C, the 10-day Eastern Xinjiang route. This is a distinct East Tianshan journey of wheat-field grasslands, desert Yardan and an SUV crossing of the Dahaidao wilderness, from S$3,858 per person. Note it does not visit Kanas or Hemu.
