A scholar’s house on rails以书香为门 · 以山川为第
The Southern Express Baiyun (南方列车·白云号) set out from Guangzhou Baiyun Station on 25 August 2026. It is run by Guangzhou Southern Train International Travel together with China Railway Guangzhou Group, and is billed as China’s first tourist train themed on a traditional scholarly family.
Its designers began with Yuelu Academy, founded in 976 on the banks of the Xiang River, and the four steps of visiting a scholar’s household: arriving at the gate, entering the courtyard, strolling the garden and retiring for the night. The train follows the same order through four spaces, so that boarding feels less like taking a seat and more like being received as a guest.
南方列车·白云号于2026年8月25日自广州白云站启航，由广州南方列车国际旅行社联合中国铁路广州局集团运营，号称全国首列中式书香门第品质型旅游列车。北宋开宝九年，岳麓书院扎根湘江；登门、入院、游园、居寝四重礼序，一进一境。列车复刻世家仪轨，划分四大空间：不是乘车，是入画。
Nights on the train, days on the ground · 夜宿列车，日间游览The train carries you between regions by night and on the long legs; by day you explore with your guide, and some nights are spent in hotels and lodges along the way. 闲庭
You board through a four-gate welcome hall, the way a scholarly household received its guests: sliding lattice doors, a skylight-style ceiling that lets in soft light, and a landscape centrepiece. Beyond it are tea seats by the windows, game tables that rearrange themselves and a small stage for evening song and dance.

Forty-eight seats beneath a ceiling shaped like the wok-ear gables of Lingnan houses, with timber brackets joined the old way and a white jade inlay on the central beam. Courses are served one by one in the Chinese manner, on gilded Liling porcelain, with Cantonese and Hunanese cooking and dishes from the regions along the line.

观澜
Modelled on the Aiwan Pavilion at Yuelu Academy, the observation car frames the land outside in windows that wrap 270 degrees. There is a bar for wines and Chinese spirits, a lounge for tea and conversation, two card rooms and a corner for hands-on heritage crafts.

When the painter Zong Bing grew too old to travel, he painted mountains and rivers on his walls and called it “travelling while lying down”. The cabins borrow the idea: a framed window onto the landscape, carved timber, a small tea corner and your own bathroom, so the journey goes on while you rest.
古人宗炳晚年无法远行，绘山水于壁，谓之“卧游”。今于车中，推窗即山河：木刻纹样、方寸茶席与独立卫浴，安居其间，旅途在休憩中继续。

Choose by season. The 12-day winter journey (26 December 2026 and 6 January 2027) follows the karst of Guangxi to Detian Falls, then Kunming, Tengchong, Shangri-La and Tiger Leaping Gorge. Yayun is the standard cabin, about 10 m², with twin beds that join into a double and its own shower and toilet. Lanyue is larger at about 13.8 m², with a lounge corner behind a curtain and a bathroom with separate wet and dry areas; there are only six on the train, so they go first. 雅韵为标准房型，约10平方米，配灵活组合双人床与独立卫浴；揽月约13.8平方米，帘幕分隔休闲角，卫浴干湿分离，全车仅六间，宜尽早预订。
